If legalism added human effort to Christ’s work, lawlessness removed obedience altogether—and both errors misunderstand grace. Paul answers in Romans 6 that grace does not excuse sin but defeats it, because union with Christ changes identity before it changes behavior.

Some early teachers redefined Christ quietly, turning the gospel into a message for the initiated rather than proclamation for all. Scripture rejects this division between ordinary believers and the enlightened: the gospel is not a puzzle to be solved but a message to be believed.

Not all threats came through distorted doctrine; some came through divided loyalty that allowed Christian confession while tolerating practices belonging to another allegiance. Revelation’s rebukes of the Nicolaitans and the way of Balaam show that Scripture treats this compromise not as weakness but as betrayal.
